I attended the Social Good Summit at the 92Y this past Saturday. The projects presented are breaking down barriers and delivering solutions using social media and technology.

- @todd_park - CTO of the US and assistant to the president. Visit data.gov to learn about how he is making data awesome. Todd Park also answers his own emails. If he doesn’t return your email within 72hrs, forward the email to him and put “You Idiot” in the subject line. He said he will be sure to respond.

- After 11 years of working in healthcare I’m finally inspired by something relevant. A Mount Sinai NYC Fellow is conducting a study on how text messaging reminders can reduce teenage pregnancy. Preliminary results are great as this population spends hours each day on their mobile devices and is responding very well to the study.

- @JoshNesbit, CEO of Medic Mobile, shared how his team is combining healthcare and mobile technology (SMS) to help citizens in East & West Africa and South Asia stay connected to healthcare providers. Some stats from Nesbit.

* There are a Billion people who will never see a doctor in their lifetime.

* SMS platform Medic Mobile increased vaccinations from 60% to 99%.

* $10 phones are the tools being used by Medic Mobile with parallel SIM cards.

* 90% of the world’s population is covered by a mobile signal; 50% of people in sub-saharan Africa own cell phones.

- Rebecca Moore, engineering manager at Google Earth Outreach, presented how Google Earth is saving animals and trees. You can also check out your home on Google Earth. I heart Rebecca !!

A follow up email was sent to me regarding Obama’s speech.

So howd he do?

Last night the pres had to do 2 things: justify his record and knock Romney. He tried to explain the progress in the economy but nobody believes we’re better off today than we were 4 years ago. All the #s tell us we’re not. Just this morning the horrific jobless #s came out. Sorry Mr. Pres you just can’t sell it. ( F ) He belted out “GM is alive” to thunderous applause. I pointed out in an earlier article how ridiculous this is. Indeed, GM is falling apart as we speak. ( F ) He killed Bin Laden!!! Sure, that’s like Nixon taking credit for landing on the moon. This was an intelligence operation, not policy, most of which was done under Bush 43. ( C+ ) He mentioned, barely, Obamacare. Legislation nobody read, nobody likes, can’t work, and the cost of which has tripled a year before it takes effect. ( F )

This speech, I believe, outlines the strategy for the next 60 days: can’t justify the record so tell everyone how the other guy would be worse. He did get some good jabs in at Romney. ( C ) I’m guessing he sat down with his advisors and decided on 1 of 2 courses: justify or motivate. Apparently they chose the latter- motivate the base. I think they think they’re in trouble. This is a very close election. There best chance is to get their people out and vote. I don’t know anyone who can motivate better than Obama. He’s brilliant! Joe Scarborough said it best this morning: Romney had nothing to say. Obama had nothing to say. But Obama says nothing much better than Romney. All in all, the speech was leftist, confrontational, divisive, rich v poor again, but inspirational to his base. Lacking facts, he made more promises and asked for another chance. Sorry Mr. Pres- fool me once, shame on me. fool me twice…… ( F )

How will you vote? #DNC or #GOP

I was cc’d on an email regarding Bill Clintons #DNC speech last night. A great start to a very important dialogue.

Question: Has there ever been a politician that didn’t have the ability to captivate an audience but got sh*t done? So much emphasis in politics is on ones ability to speak publicly. Not everyone is meant for the spotlight.

…..And use the campaign $ on something else. Perhaps the homeless, disease prevention, education, farming or creating new jobs.

NICE TRY BILL

I haven’t been watching either convention too much. Same old crap, different day. I must admit, however, I was looking forward to Bill’s speech. I thought he was a good president and voted for him twice. He didn’t let me down. The magic of his delivery, the wit, the sarcasm- just a joy to behold. Unfortunately, as enjoyable as it was, it became clear he had an impossible task- to make a president, who has performed badly, appear to be a success. If you sift thru the entertainment, it looks like Bill was on an ego trip. He kept comparing his presidency to Obama’s. “We face a long, hard road to recovery” he said. I remember when he created 6 million new jobs by the end of 1994. “We need to lay a solid foundation for a future economy”. But Obama has increased the debt by $6 trillion. Bill reminded us that the Repubs doubled the debt after he left office but failed to mention Obama tripled it.

The question of the Dem convention seems to be “are we better today than we were 4 years ago?” Bill didn’t let us down. With conviction, shaking his fist he boldly pronounced “We are better off today than we were 4 years ago!” Hmmmmmm. So 4 years ago 6% unemployment is worse than 8.3% today? A $10 trillion debt then is worse than $16 trillion today? 35 million on food stamps then is worse than 48 million today? I wonder if the 25 million unemployed think they are better off. I could go on but you get the point. Although entertaining, Bill tried to do something that can’t be done- try to make Obama’s record a good one. By comparing Obama’s record to his, Bill only reinforced how bad a record Obama really has. Well Barry, you’re on deck. I’m sure there will be thunderous applause, flag waving, and maybe even some tears. I’ll be watching. I know I’ll be entertained. You see, some of my most enjoyable moments come when I watch someone trying to defend the indefensable.

A special post…. (page 99)

I attended a dinner last night as Lauren Ruotolo’s +1. The evening was loaded with surprises. The dinner was organized by Miss Katherine Mossman, an ex-corporate employee and current entrepreneur (in love with her career shift). We were 15 motivated successful women dining at Lady Gaga’s UWS family restaurant, Joanne Trattoria. And Cynthia did welcome us before we began our evening discussions. The guest speaker was Agapi Stassinopoulos, author of Unbinding The Heart. She is also the sister of Arianna Huffington. Was there more?!? YES. Agapi handed everyone a copy of her book so I decided to open it and see which page I would land on. Page 99, chapter “Me, Men and My Mother.” Ok….I’m intrigued. It was the last page in the chapter and it gave rise to the purpose of being Singular. “A sense of wholeness and freedom, with unlimited possibility - not bound by fears or longings, but open to sharing the abundance of love in whatever form it took.”

Agapi asked that everyone introduce themselves throughout the dinner. And so the evening went on and while we came in as individuals we left as a singular family. The women at this dinner were smart, sexy, courageous, single, married, divorced, cultured and the list goes on. One gal lives in Dubai, another spent 2 years in Kabul, another is a life-coach and yoga instructor, 2 Harvard MBA’s, an Oncologist and then…..ME : )

Wow. A total surprise. Or maybe Ed was surprised to see Kavita. This just made training camp worth it.

Kavita bumps into my family at fins camp. I adore Ed and Cathy as well as his girls Stephani and Holly. Ed is my dads first cousin. Not only did Ed play ball for 10 years, he received his law degree from UM and is currently a practicing Judge in Miami. #NewmsGotTalent.

I think Ed Newman would be stellar on television. A Long Island Jew plays football at Duke, gets drafted to the Dolphins, then wraps up his career as a Judge in Miami. He’s the tough guy with a big heart. What do you think? He’d win all of the Judge Judy fans over. He needs to film a sizzle reel for the Judge Ed show. Any suggestions?

I love Mad Men but Miss Advised recently caught my attention.

All the single ladies put your hands in the air for || Miss Advised ||. A new show dedicated to showcasing women’s insecurities, fears, tears and the potential for finding true love. I admit to relating to each of the 3 women.

Julia (LA)- Sometimes you just don’t know what you want but you go for it anyways. AND Julia goes for it. She seems to land every time and picks right back up.

Amy (NYC)- She’s analytical and a business women. I see a little of myself in her as well.

And Emily (San Fran)- the daughter of a Jewish mother. Ditto. Need I say more? I’ll never forget the day I asked my mom why she married her husband. She said, “Well….it’s a couples society”.

While many are calling these ladies loco, I’m simply saying so many gals are guilty of dealing with men and relationships in the same manner. Be yourself. Smile lots. He’ll find you.

From Blog to Book !!

October 27,2011 - Hyperink receives $1.2M in venture round funding. Book authors and publishers haven’t always gotten along….until now. From blog to book, hyperink seeks out hyper frequented topics on the web and turns the information into an e-book. Hyperink hires freelance editors to assist with copy which reduces the authors cost and speeds up the time it takes to release a book. A book could be launched as early as 1 month. This is a great way to keep new information social and fresh on the minds of readers.

Authors have also commented that this platform drives $ to the authors banks within months unlike traditional publishing which could take years. A win-win for both teams. Best of luck hyperink.

A GoPro Hero video.

Its not easy to learn how to snow board when you are in your 20’s. None-the-less, my friend Zeena and I decided to take lessons in Pennsylvania. A few years have gone by and we continue to improve our skills on the slopes but this time in Vail. With the help of Zeena’s brother Andrew, a snow boarding instructor, the painful falls were few.

The annual snowboarding trip to Vail for Super Bowl weekend lives on.

A survival guide to an Indian wedding

From Stephen to Mr. Patel - “You know me, I know you, can I marry your daughter”.

I met Stephen Skakandy and Sejal Patel at a wedding I recently attended. The couple met only 10 months ago and are scheduled to be wed in November in Omaha, Nebraska. Upon our initial introduction it was evident that this couple likes to have fun. They chatted about their upcoming wedding in Omaha and the types of things they were preparing in order to combine the Indian and Christian traditions. Indian weddings are a community affair. Unlike typical weekend weddings, Indian weddings take place over the course of a few weeks and include multiple events.

This unique wedding invitation video is just over the top cool and appropriate for their invited guests. Mr. Skakandy’s guests are now prepared for the traditional light bulb dance and other festivities. Here’s to the Bride and Groom - L’ Chaim.
